My moment of realization. Empty My moment of realization.

Hello fellow inventors,

My name is Chris I'm 28 years old, I am a Inventor that has a day job unfortunately. I have been working in dentistry for 8 years now and believe it has set me up perfectly to be an inventor and I'm going to take the ball and run with it. Here is my story of how I realized my purpose was inventing.

A few years ago I was in San Diego, California visiting my brother during his marine corps graduation. After his graduation we went to the seaside cliffs that prevail over the city. As we were watching the hang gliders and glider planes take off, my flash of genius (for that day) occurred, I asked myself how and where were those gliders getting there energy, I looked around and found a generator that was fed by solar panels, and the generator was powering a winch that pulled the glider towards it and the glider would release when enough speed was built up. As I watched this once or twice I came up with a glider system that could transport people from point A to B over very long distances. I feverishly worked on this concept on the flight home. I noticed when I got back to my day job the inventing process doesn't stop, I saw inventions waiting to be created everywhere I saw a problem. By the end of the month I had over a dozen of serious dental inventions and a portfolios worth of a wide variety of concepts and inventions after a few months of this I bought 2 voice recorders just to keep up with the ideas, I love inventing and its more of a way of life then a title for me. Thanks for listening to my story and rock on inventors.

That's a great story Chris - and it's exactly how many of us started out.

For me it was when I was in 3rd grade living in San Antonio and I would get the butter tubs when they were empty and try to figure out how I could affix them to a helium balloon I badgered my mother into buying me. I remember it like it was yesterday.

Do your homework, take the time to master your craft and don’t be afraid to ask people for advice – just make sure you ask the right people

My moment of realization. Empty Realization

For me it has always been about the challenge of solving the problem. Even as a child if something did not work the way I thought it should was a pain to work with or a chore I really wanted to get done with quickly I would try my best to figure out a way around it or how to make it do what I wanted. Needless to say my parents were impressed and cringed at the same time. Because some of my work arounds or improvements came at the cost of the family toaster, sprinkler head, water hose, etc. Hey........all in the name of science right? : )

I was just thinking I wish mine would have happened as early as yours Smile. It"s even worse when you have to buy your own prototyping materials!!

Over the last few months....I have went through every colander I had here, cut up all of my plastic bowls (Literally) and now that I am working on other things.....Believe me "My kitchen is like a ghost town" Good News is this......I have an excuse not to cook!!

Great stories everyone.......I so love this!!!

But the fact is it happened - and that says a lot about you!

My moment of realization. Empty Ideas are a dime a dozen

Post  mike Sat 30 Jul 2011 - 21:36

In '95 or so I came home "all fired up" about inventing and literally threw 150 of my worst ideas in the trash can. They were: too complicated to manufacture, market too small, mediocre idea, and many other reasons to pitch them. I then vetted the remaining 100 down to the best (most marketable) two ideas and worked on them. Of course there have been many many more ideas since then, ten or so patents written and submitted and one issued but still no follow through. Now recently retired I have more time to advance the projects and am concentrating on just one. Moral of the story is focus, stay on track and do something to work on your project every day and ignore all the better ideas that will come your way. Just write them down and promise yourself that you will get to it next.

Great advice Mike...we all take a unique road to the end, but if we keep at it...we all eventually cross the line that few are willing to even aim for.

As a Specialized Auto mechanic for 20 years and self employed all those years I have had my share of engineering 101 moments when parts break or are not built correctly as OEM (Original Equipment by Manufacturer) by after market manufacturers, bracket's need to be made or a closer inspection of the fabrication can reveal a less then spectacular experience while changing auto parts under a hood.
Slowly but surely I am making stride after stride. This Friday will be my first inventors group meet, looking forward to it, I'm ready. Smile

Good for you Kelly! That's great!

But a word of caution - almost all the inventor clubs in California are "owned" in some way and they are for profit. They may call them dues but make sure you ask if the money goes into someone's pocket.
