I have a provisional patent pending that has hand drawn pictures of the invention. Can I replace those with CAD drawings when I file for my final patent?

Hi Rodger

I was just having this discussion last week with a patent attorney friend of mine. Line Drawings, CAD Drawings and even Photographs have been accepted by the USPTO in patents.

The rules are largely silent on the subject of the actual drawing style, however they talk extensively on other aspects of using a drawing at all – which is not actually required

I'm not sure I understand. Can you use a CAD drawing? or replace a drawing from a PPA to a regular patent?

While you can submit most anything for a provisional application (remember, the PTO will not examine your provisional application, it only serves as a place holder for filing a regular application within a year), a regular application requires formal drawings that must conform to the speicifc PTO requirements. These drawigns are typically done by a professional draftsman who is knowledgable about these requirements. Good luck.
